New member to the CRoLEV Team
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Alex M. Uibariu has joined our team as the CRoLEV post-doctoral researcher. She has obtained her PhD in Criminology from the University of Portsmouth, following the submission of a doctoral thesis on “A Theory of State Crimes Against Democracy (SCADs) in Contemporary Polities”. Alex also holds a BSc (Hons) in Criminology and Criminal Justice and an MRes in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Portsmouth. Her research interests include the disruption of democracy by elected or appointed political actors, the subversion of the Rule of Law and its effects on legitimisation, and the consequences of neoliberal influences on contemporary democratic governance.
CRoLEV Scoping Paper—New Publication!
The latest CRoLEV research publication has now been released. The scoping paper presents, based on the detailed mapping out of existing resources, thematic research, survey and focus group undertaken to date, qualitative and quantitative analysis via new data sets on the Rule of Law and European values in Cyprus, with a view to create a renewed methodology for ‘Rule of Law and European Values’ placed within the framework of existing EU, European, international and global initiatives and in the context of UN SDGs. CRoLEV at the Court of Justice of the European Union
On 10 March 2023, our team had the pleasure and honour of presenting CRoLEV to members of the Court of Justice of the European Union via Zoom. In particular, we delivered a presentation on the project’s objectives and progress so far to the Cabinets of T.H. Judge C. Lycourgos, President of the 4th Chamber of the Court of Justice and T.H. Judge A. Marcoulli, President of the 2nd Chamber of the General Court. The Judges and their cabinets responded positively to the presentation and expressed their best wishes to CRoLEV.
Contribution to the ‘Report on the presidential elections in Cyprus and the Rule of Law’
In the context of the presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus in February 2023, the Democracy Reporting International, an international NGO, published a report on the presidential elections in Cyprus and the Rule of Law. The analysis was written by Nino Tsereteli, Research Officer at DRI, with consultation by Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Professor of European Law and Reform, Head of the School of Law and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on the Rule of Law and European Values CRoLEV, UCLan Cyprus and Dr. Constantinos Kombos, (then) Associate Professor of Public Law, Chairman of the Law Department, University of Cyprus (and now Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus). Contribution to the 2023 Rule of Law Report of the European Commission
Within January 2023, Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Professor of European Law and Reform, and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence CRoLEV, contributed to the targeted consultation of the European Commission in the 2023 Rule of Law Reporting process for Cyprus. The publication of the Report by the European Commission is expected later in the year.
Invitation to the UN Institute on Training and Research (UNITAR)
As of March 2023, Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Professor of European Law and Reform, and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence CRoLEV, was invited by UNITAR to contribute to their Rule Law course on the MA in International Law and Diplomacy delivered with the UN University of Peace.
Appointment to the CRoLEV Editorial Board – APPLY!
CRoLEV has undertaken to produce a series of deliverables and outputs for the project. Among them are (i) a peer-reviewed edited volume entitled ‘EU Rule of Law and European Values in Turbulent Times’; and (ii) a peer-reviewed online Yearbook entitled ‘ROLEV Interdisciplinary Yearbook’. CRoLEV is therefore seeking to appoint a high-quality editorial board from experts in the field, with concrete answers and proposals to the problematics of the project, who will engage directly with the above-mentioned Deliverables.

Gender pay gap survey in the legal profession in Cyprus – TAKE THE SURVEY!
CRoLEV would like to invite you to complete a short survey concerning the gender gap in the legal profession in Cyprus. The findings of this survey will be presented at the forthcoming “Women in Law” Conference of the Cyprus Bar Association, to be held on April 5th 2023, and for informing subsequent related outputs. On 2 and 3 December 2022 CRoLEV joined the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law, Alternative and Innovative Methods (ICLAIM) in the delivery of a new ‘Social Mediation upholding the Rule of Law’ Training and Focus Group targeting CSOs in Cyprus and beyond. On 27 January 2023, the first edition of the “The Rule of Law and European Values in the Modern Ages: Measuring Their Impact on the Administration of Justice” training session and survey took place.
